Frederick de Houtman was forced to stay in Aceh from 1599 to 1601. During that time he assembled materials on Malay as spoken in Aceh, consisting of a series of dialogues and a dictionary. There is one extant copy of the original, now in Djakarta National library. Translations in Latin, Spanish, English, were made soon afterwards. The original text was published in Amsterdam in 1673. Lombard had access to both the 1603 and 1673 editions. Details can be found in Lombard's introduction. This wordlist contains the materials in the dictionary. It is possible that the dialogues contain words missing in the ABVD meanings list.
Orthography is not stable. A word may be transcribed differently in the dictionary and in the dialogues. This word-list gives all available transcriptions for each word. The dictionary transcription is given first.
